Influencing Agriculture: After the Harvest 2025

On Friday, September 12, 2025, Deputy Director Melonie Marano and Commissioner Paul Drake attended the third biennial Influencing Agriculture: After the Harvest event hosted at Duke Farms in Hillsborough. The event, comprised of varied presentations and panels, was a tribute to the hard work and dedication of Somerset County’s farmers - exploring the challenges of harvest season, the preparation and planning that pave the way for a successful next season, and the initiatives shaping the future of the County's agricultural community.

In 1983, the Somerset County Agriculture Development Board was founded, beginning the process of farmland preservation. Today, 131 preserved farms are monitored annually. Somerset County’s agricultural roots run deep. From fertile river valleys to rolling hills, our landscapes have sustained farming for generations. Today, our farms provide more than food — they preserve open space, protect scenic beauty, and safeguard the environment. They also drive innovation.

While traditional crops remain strong, more farmers are branching into specialty produce, value-added products, and agritourism. Orchards, vineyards, pumpkin patches, and farm markets draw visitors, connecting agriculture to our economy and our community in new ways. Agriculture here is more than an industry. It is a living heritage and a shared responsibility. And together, we can ensure that Somerset County remains a place where farming not only survives — but thrives.

Additionally shared at this vital meeting, was the County's new Farmers Market app. This new app provides our residents easy access to our local farms and farmers. Whether you want to go apple picking or pumpkin picking, walk through a sunflower or lavender field, or purchase County-made goods, the app will help you connect with sustainable, homegrown and homemade ingredients and goods.
