In celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution, Somerset County is pursuing a series of archaeological investigations at the Lord Stirling Manor Archaeological Site in Basking Ridge. A part of Lord Stirling Park, this site was home to the country estate of General William Alexander, "Lord Stirling," and his family during the critical years of the Revolutionary War. Listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places in 1975, the estate once comprised of an elaborate courtyard, stables, orchards, vineyards, a terraced garden, and a grand Palladian-style manor house. After a storied history, all that remains today on the site is a 1923 Montgomery-Ward Kit House that rests on the foundation of Stirling's manor house. Follow along to discover more about the grandest colonial country estate in the region.
