Historic Preservation is the practice of identifying, documenting, protecting, and preserving buildings, objects, archaeological sites, and / or landscapes that contribute to our past. Historic Preservation Programs at local, state, and national levels across the country work to designate and maintain historic sites - all built on the basis of the National Historic Preservation Act (1966) and in New Jersey, the New Jersey Register of Historic Places Act (1970).

Can historic properties be demolished even with New Jersey or National Register of Historic Places status?

YES. The New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places do not protect a property from demolition. These registers act as a national standard for the documentation of historic properties so that they are available for research by future generations. Only properties with easements or local ordinances have protection from demolition. Publicly owned historic resources are bound to review processes.

What financial assistance can be provided to private owners of historic properties?
