What is Stormwater?

Stormwater as defined under the New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination System regulations at N.J.A.C. 7:14A as:
water resulting from precipitation (including rain and snow) that runs off the land's surface, is transmitted to the subsurface, or is captured by separate storm sewers or other sewage or drainage facilities, or conveyed by snow removal equipment.

What Causes Stormwater Pollution?

Human activity is largely responsible for stormwater pollution.  Everything that we put on the ground or into the storm drain can end up in our water. Each of us has a responsibility to make sure these contaminants stay out of our water.

Report Excess Road Salt
(County Roads only after 72 hours after a storm event)

High levels of salinity, which can result from road salts that are washed off of roadways, may negatively impact waterways and drinking water.  You can help us by reporting any excess piles of road salt left on County roadways after 72 hours after a storm event.

For County Roadways only - Please call 908-541-5021
Call your municipality for local roadways.

Somerset County roadways are regulated under the NJDEP Highway Agency MS4 NJPDES Master General Permit, also known as the R12 – Highway Agency Stormwater General Permit.  This permit addresses ways in which the county may minimize pollutants entering our waters from certain stormwater drainage systems owned or operated by the county.
