Construction Announcement
This project is currently being advertised for bid. Posting date is February 3, 2026 with bids due February 24, 2026. Refer to County Purchasing webpage for more information.
Starting in August 2026, Somerset County will begin the replacement of Bridge No. L1014 on Stirling Road (CR 653). The project, located between Community Place and Dillion Court, is expected to last approximately five months. The Project Location Map can be viewed here.
During this time, the bridge will be closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Local residents should note that access to all driveways will be maintained throughout the construction period.
General traffic will be detoured via Mountain Avenue (CR 622) and Hillcrest Road (CR 531). A separate heavy-vehicle detour has been established for trucks over 4 tons, utilizing Valley Road (CR 512), King George Road (CR 651), Mount Bethel Road (CR 651), and Mountain Boulevard (CR 527). The Detour Plan for both the Detour and Truck Detour can be viewed here.
Project Description
County Bridge No. L1014 carries Stirling Road (CR 653) over Stony Brook in Warren Township. The existing bridge is a single-span slab with embedded structural steel stringers superstructure supported on concrete abutments. The existing 19 ft span bridge provides a two-lane, one in each direction, 33 ft clear roadway width. The Project Location Map can be viewed here.
The existing structure is overall in poor condition due to parapet, deck, and superstructure deterioration. The substructure is in satisfactory condition due to major scaling in most of the bays of the concrete backwall, a wide vertical crack at top between the interface of the stone masonry south abutment breastwall and southwest wingwall and pointing in the wingwalls.
The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of the bridge with a single span, precast rigid frame superstructure with concrete parapets supported on reinforced concrete abutments. The roadway pavement width at the bridge will be widened from 33 ft to 40 ft, to comply with NJDOT standards.
This project is funded by FY2023 NJDOT Local Bridge Future Needs grant.
