Starting in February 2027, Somerset County will begin the replacement of Bridge No. D1003 on Burnt Mills Road (CR 641). The project, located between Burnt Mills Road (CR 620) on the north and Easton Turnpike (CR 614) on the south, is expected to last approximately three months (weather permitting). The Project Location Map can be viewed here.
During this time, the bridge will be closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Local residents should note that access to all driveways will be maintained throughout the construction period.
General traffic will be detoured via Burnt Mills Road (CR 620), Rattlesnake Bridge Road / Lamington Road (CR 665) and Easton Turnpike (CR 614). The Detour Plan can be viewed here.
Project Description
County Bridge No. D1003 carries Burnt Mills Road (CR 641) over Mill Raceway off the Lamington River, in the township of Branchburg. The existing bridge is a single-span structure consisting of a simply supported reinforced concrete slab span with a clear span of 13’. The bridge provides a two-lane, one in each direction, 25’ clear roadway width. The Project Location Map can be viewed here.
The structure is in fair condition due to the condition of the superstructure and substructure. The superstructure is rated fair due to large spalls and rusted rebars and moderate delamination. The substructure is rated fair due to moderate abrasion throughout both abutments and wingwalls, heavy delamination noted at various locations of the substructure.
The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of the bridge with a single span, 3-sided rigid frame. The proposed clear roadway width at the bridge will be widened to 35’-6”, to comply with NJDOT standards.
This project is funded by the County.
Public Information Meeting
A virtual public information meeting for this project is scheduled for Wednesday, August 26, 2026 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. The purpose of this meeting is to inform local residents, officials, and the general public of Somerset County’s proposed plans to replace the bridge that carries Burnt Mills Road (CR 641) over Mill Raceway. The information meeting allows the public an opportunity for full update on the project, including construction schedule, and to ask questions to the Project Team.
