Starting in April 2027, Somerset County will begin the rehabilitation of Bridge No. F1306 on Rippling Brook Way. The project is expected to last approximately two and a half months. The Project Location Map can be viewed here.
During this time, the bridge will remain open to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic since the roadway is on a cul-de-sac. Project will utilize temporary traffic signals to provide safe passage for two-way traffic using one lane while work is staged on each side. Local residents should note that access to all driveways will be maintained throughout the construction period.
Project Description
County Bridge No. F1306 carries Rippling Brook Way over Tributary of Mine Brook in the Borough of Bernardsville. The existing bridge is a pipe arch culvert consisting of galvanized structural steel plate arch sections connected with bolts, with a clear span of 16’-5”, a rise of 9’-11”, and a length of 84 feet measured along the centerline of the opening. Over the bridge, Rippling Brook Way is approximately 24.7 feet curb to curb, with 3.3’ and 5’ wide earth and gravel shoulders on north and south sides respectively. The total radial distance is approximately 33’ between the guiderails. The Project Location Map can be viewed here.
The existing structure is in poor condition due to the severe corrosion and section loss observed along the invert plates. The bituminous coating on the pipe arch intrados is heavily weathered with loss of bond and common areas of exposed metal. Heavy scour was observed at the downstream end of the culvert, exposing the top of footing.
The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of the bridge by repairing culvert section losses, restore scoured streambed and embankments, and provide scour protection to extend the service life of the structure. Additionally, work will include improving highway safety features by upgrading roadway guide rail in the project area to meet current NJDOT requirements, replacement of the existing chain link fence, and roadway resurfacing. Due to low traffic volume and the adequacy of existing roadway geometry, no widening or realignment of the roadway is proposed.
