Project Description

County Bridge No. G0801 carries Morton Street over Cuckels Brook in the Township of Bridgewater. The bridge’s original construction date is unknown but is speculated to be around 1930. The structure was rehabilitated in 2007. The existing structure is a single span, steel stringer with structural steel corrugated deck panels. The structure provides a 27.3’ roadway width (guiderail to guiderail), providing 2-lanes for two-way traffic with an ADT of 160, per traffic counts performed on October 22, 2020.

The overall condition of the structure is critical due to low inventory ratings. The overall physical condition of the structure is poor due to the condition of the superstructure. The poor rating of the superstructure is due to section losses at top and bottom flanges of multiple stringers. The substructure condition rating is satisfactory due to moderate scaling along the water level and exposed aggregate throughout the breast wall. The structure is classified as structurally deficient and is currently posted for a 13-ton gross weight limit.

The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of this bridge by total replacement of the existing structure. The proposed bridge will be a precast concrete rigid frame with concrete pylons and 4-bar bridge railing.  The proposed structure will remove the bridge from the structural deficiency classification.

This project is funded by FY2021 NJDOT Local Bridge Future Needs grant.
