Project Description
County Bridge No. D1303 carries Mendham Road over Tributary to Peapack Brook in the Borough of Peapack Gladstone. The existing bridge is a singe span, corrugated steel 3.4’ high 4.7’ high wide elliptical pipe with steel girder and floor beam extensions. Over the bridge, Mendham Road is a 29’ wide road from edge of pavement to edge of pavement, with one 12’ wide lane and one 2’-3’ wide shoulder in each direction. The Project Location Map can be viewed here.
The existing structure is in serious condition due to section loss on the bottom of the steel pipe, large spalls with voids on both sides of the headwall at the outlet allowing for piping and separation of the culvert pipe to the headwall up to 2”, and extensive undermining of the culvert at the outlet greater than 4’.
The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of the bridge with a single span, concrete elliptical pipe with a precast concrete headwall. Additional work include roadway resurfacing and the installation of a new manhole structure to tie the new bridge to the existing draining system.
This project is County funded.
A virtual public information meeting for this project is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, 2026 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. The purpose of this meeting is to inform local residents, officials, and the general public of Somerset County’s proposed plans to replace the bridge that carries Mendham Road over Tributary to Peapack Brook, in the Borough of Peapack Gladstone. Replacement scope of work will include design, permitting and bid documents for the installation of a new elliptical concrete pipe with precast concrete headwalls, installation of a new manhole structure, and other roadway work to remove the structurally deficient designation. The information meeting allows the public an opportunity for full update on the project, including construction schedule, and to ask questions to the Project Team.
