Construction Announcement

Starting in August 2027, Somerset County will begin the rehabilitation of Bridge No. F0807 on Davenport Street. The project, located between West Summit Street and Green Street, is expected to last approximately three months. The Project Location Map can be viewed here.
During this time, the bridge will be closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Local residents should note that access to all driveways will be maintained throughout the construction period.
General traffic will be detoured via Green Street, North Bridge Street, and West Cliff Street. The Detour Plan can be viewed here.
Project Description
County Bridge No. F0807 carries Davenport Street over Peters Brook in the Borough of Somerville. The existing bridge is a two span reinforced concrete arch. The total span length is 65 feet consisting of two 30 foot spans and provides a two-lane, one in each direction, 30 ft clear roadway width. The Project Location Map can be viewed here.
The existing structure is overall in poor condition due to the deterioration of the substructure. The substructure is in poor condition due to moderate and severe scaling of the pier and wingwalls as well as partial footing exposure of the south abutment and pier. The superstructure is in satisfactory condition due to the fine cracks with efflorescence at the arch intrados and a large spall in the southwest spandrel wall.
The purpose of this rehabilitation project is to improve the rating of the structure in order to remove it from the structurally deficient and scour critical designation list. The repairs will include scour countermeasures, spandrel repairs, structural repairs, and waterproofing of the arches.
This project is funded by FY2024 NJDOT Local Bridge Future Needs grant.
Public Information Meeting
A virtual public information meeting for this project is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2026 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. The purpose of this meeting is to inform local residents, officials, and the general public of Somerset County’s proposed plans to rehabilitate the bridge that carries Davenport Street over Peters Brook, in the Borough of Somerville. The information meeting allows the public an opportunity for full update on the project, including construction schedule, and to ask questions to the Project Team.
