PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Belle Mead-Blawenburg Road (CR 601) is classified as an Urban Major Collector and provides one lane of travel in each direction. The posted speed limit along Belle Mead-Blawenburg Road is 50 mph. The intersection of Belle Mead-Blawenburg Road (CR 601) and East Mountain Road is a three-way, unsignalized intersection controlled by a stop sign on East Mountain Road. Significant through traffic on CR 601, combined with turning traffic at the intersection, creates safety and operational concerns that this Concept Development project aims to address by identifying and implementing intersection improvements.

The project area begins approximately 700 feet south of East Mountain Road and continues north for about 1,500 feet, ending around 200 feet north of the Carrier Clinic driveway. The project area also extends approximately 500 feet southwest along East Mountain Road from its intersection with CR 601.

This Concept Development project involves various improvements, including the realignment and widening of CR 601 near the East Mountain Road intersection to provide a dedicated left-turn lane, widening of East Mountain Road at the intersection to provide dedicated left and right-turn lanes, safety upgrades to the roadway geometry, shoulders, striping, and signage, and enhancement of the stormwater management system per NJDEP requirements.

A traffic signal warrant analysis was conducted for the intersection of Belle Mead-Blawenburg Road (CR 601) and East Mountain Road as part of this Concept Development project, using criteria from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD, 11th Edition). A traffic signal was found to be warranted based on MUTCD criteria and, therefore, will be proposed for implementation to improve traffic operations at the intersection of Belle Mead-Blawenburg Road (CR 601) and East Mountain Road.
