Hillcrest Road, County Route 531, Improvements from Valley Road to Crestwood Drive, Borough of Watchung

PROJECT AREA DESCRIPTION

Hillcrest Road is a major north - south commuter link from Route 78 to Route 22. Average daily traffic volumes exceed 20,000 vehicles per day. Current traffic patterns exhibit heavy weekday traffic in both the morning and evening rush hours. The roadway is classified as an Urban Minor Arterial by the NJDOT Straight Line Diagrams.

The road has steep curved grades and slippery conditions particularly on wet weather days. This segment of Hillcrest Road is posted with a truck restriction of no vehicles over five (5) tons as well as posted steep grade warning signage. The horizontal and vertical alignment of Hillcrest Road results in a very limited stopping sight distance for motorists traveling along the roadway. There are also sight triangle obstructions for vehicles entering onto Hillcrest Road from High Oaks Drive and Ridge Road.
