New Jersey's First Collaborative Training Program for History Docents!

DocentProgramLogo-TopPageAre you interested in local history? Do you love learning new things? Join the Somerset County Docent Training Program - New Jersey's first collaborative training program for history docents!

Docents are dedicated volunteers who lead tours and public programs engaging visitors at historic house museums and historic sites. As a docent, you'll have the chance to inspire and educate people of all ages!

The Somerset County Docent Training Program will provide you with the essential skills and foundational knowledge you will need to become a volunteer docent for a local historic site. Attend interactive workshops, engage with experienced docents and educators, go on fieldtrips to historic sites, and more!

This free, in-person training program is open to all New Jersey residents ages 18+.

225 Middlebrook BBB 04 ArtilleryDid you know that America will be celebrating its 250th Anniversary as a nation in 2026? Somerset County has a rich local history and heritage! By becoming a history docent at a local historic site, you will inspire and educate people of all ages as you share stories of our local history and help visitors prepare to celebrate the 250th!

During the Revolutionary War, George Washington and four of his top generals stayed at five houses in Somerset County - known today as the Five Generals Houses. These houses are still preserved today, open to the public, and looking for volunteers! 

Participants in the Winter/Spring 2025 Somerset County Docent Training Program will be trained to volunteer at one of Somerset County's Five Generals Houses!
