• August 15, 2025: Submission packages and fees due (on or before August 15, 2025)
• September 2025: Final historic site assignments (with contact information) released to artists
• June 2026: Brief check-in with artists by Cultural & Heritage Commission Staff
• August 2026: Insurance forms sent to participating artists
• September 2026: Artwork and insurance forms due
• October 2026: Opening reception and winners announced
• October 2026 through January 2027: Main exhibition
• January through April 2027: Traveling exhibition (dates and sites TBD)

Hues of History will commemorate 25 years of historic preservation in Somerset County by showcasing artistic interpretations of local historic sites which cover a diverse range of time periods, architectural styles, and locations throughout Somerset County. Participating artists are asked to share their unique perspectives and representations of these historic sites. The primary focus of submitted artwork should be to highlight the exterior of each site’s main building/structure. Artists may also choose to include the following in their work:

• Scenic landscapes and the natural environment
• Special events, such as reenactments, holiday celebrations, or concerts taking place at the site
• Out-buildings and other historically significant elements located on the property

Artists may NOT depict the interior of their assigned historic site and should focus only on the site’s exterior.

When artists receive their final site assignment, they will also receive “highlights” information about their assigned site, such as the site’s historical significance, notable residents, and major events that the site hosts throughout the year which may help artists in choosing subject matter.

Only two-dimensional works will be accepted. Examples include drawings, paintings, digital or film photography, mixed media artwork, and collage. If you are uncertain about eligible mediums, would like to change your selected medium or if your artwork will be presented on a non-standard canvas (e.g., a painting on wood or a photograph printed on metal), please contact Cultural & Heritage staff at CulturalHeritage@somersetcountynj.gov to discuss.

Over 300 years of history in Somerset County has produced a rich and diverse cultural heritage and physical environment. Our architecturally significant resources are evident of that, and the Somerset County Historic Preservation Grant Program aims to preserve, restore, and rehabilitate these resources. Historic sites across the county contribute to the cultural and architectural value of our landscape. To help preserve our historic sites, the voters of Somerset County approved the expansion of the existing Open Space and Farmland Trust Fund to include Historic Preservation.

Since the first grant round in 1999, over $20 million has been granted out to preserve more than 70 historically significant buildings, structures, or objects.
