August 30th is National Grief Awareness Day
Submitted by John Bolier- Richard Hall Community Health and Wellness Center
Life has many experiences that generate stress which can adversely affect one’s mental health. One of the most stressful endeavors of my life was the process of purchasing a home last year. The endless requests from lawyers and real estate agents caused me intense anxiety. Once my wife and I finally moved into our new home, our anxiety was alleviated, but only for a short time. Unfortunately, within two weeks of moving into our new home, my mother-in-law passed away. My mother in law’s passing on August 12th, 2024 started my wife and I on our respective grief journeys. Grief can have an enormous impact on one’s life. Grieving is a normal part of life but can negatively affect someone’s mental health if not channeled properly.
Following the passing of a loved one, typical grief feelings usually follow such as longing for the lost person, pain, sorrow and sometimes anger. Unfortunately, grief can act as a catalyst for more severe mental health issues that manifest themselves in a variety of ways. Periods of grief can cause a person to begin showing signs of depression, become more isolated, have panic attacks and wish that they had died too. Some might even consider suicide in order to be with the loved one that recently passed away.
People experiencing traumatic grief need to receive the proper support from their friends, loved ones and professionals. A grieving individual should be given ample opportunity to discuss the loved one they lost and how they feel. It takes some individuals a long time to recover from their grief so it’s crucial to be patient during their respective grief journey. It’s vital to support an individual in seeking professional help should they want to hurt themselves or become suicidal due to their intense feelings of grief.
It’s extremely important to keep in touch with a person who has recently had a love one pass away and have an honest discussion with them about their feelings. Grieving individuals should be on the lookout if their feeling metamorphize into more severe mental health symptoms. Anyone who has difficulty getting through the grieving process and has feelings of severe anxiety, suicide or hurting yourself should seek professional help right away.
If you or a loved one is struggling with mental health, substance use or gambling challenges, please call our ACCESS Center at 908-253-3165. If this is a psychiatric emergency call Bridgeway PESS at 908-526-4100
