Older Adults Can Prevent Falls, Avoid Costly Injuries by Improving Strength and Mobility at Somerset County Senior Wellness Centers in September

Post Date:08/27/2026 8:00 AM

The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services provides information regarding aging safely in place and in the community. Supported by the Somerset County Commissioners and NJ Department of Human Services, Division of Aging Services, Somerset County Senior Wellness Centers are open to independent, Somerset County residents, 60 years of age and above. Interested residents should contact the main office at (908) 704-6346 or (888) 747-1122 to hear more about eligibility criteria and center operations. Proof of identification, age and county residency are required to participate.

According to the U.S. Centerspicn for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are the leading cause of injury for adults older than 65, with many falls requiring emergency room visits and hospitalizations. September is Fall Prevention Awareness Month, and each Senior Wellness Center offers an array of classes, such as Tai Chi, GeriFit, and Gentle Aerobics, to keep older adults healthy, nimble, and on their toes.

In addition to attending strength and mobility classes, many falls can be prevented by removing tripping hazards at home. Older adults can take extra precautions by securing loose wires, adding grab bars to bathrooms and staircases, and installing brighter lights bulbs in walkways and rooms.

The CDC also recommends following these top four safety precautions to help prevent falls:

  1. Get screened for Osteoporosis.
  2. Schedule an eye exam to update outdated prescriptions for eyeglasses.
  3. Schedule a visit with your doctor to assess your risk of falling. Your doctor can also review medications that may cause drowsiness, sleepiness, or dizziness.
  4. Engage in physical activity to help improve balance and strength. Exercise plays an important role in maintaining mobility and overall health.

Additional activities, events, and programs are scheduled throughout the month of September at all six Somerset County Senior Wellness Centers, which are operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services (OoADS). Each center is dedicated to helping seniors stay healthy, active, and connected with community. All centers will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day.

On Friday, September 18, 2026, and Monday, September 21, 2026, the annual senior wellness center picnic will be held at Colonial Park – Knob Hill Pavilion, located at 156 Mettlers Road in Somerset. On September 21, the Senior Wellness Centers at Hillsborough, Montgomery, and Quail Brook will be at the picnic.
