Older Adults Can Improve Mobility, Prevent Injuries by Staying Active at Somerset County Wellness Centers in June
June is National Safety Month and according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are the leading cause of injury for adults aged 65 and older.
“One in four adults older than 65 report falling each year,” said Commissioner Elizabeth Graner, liaison to the Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services. “Small changes at home, like better lighting in stairwells or wrapping up cable cords, can help prevent major injuries. These precautions can prevent a costly visit to the emergency room for a broken hip, ankle, or arm.”
Every year, older adults account for one million hospitalizations, and three million emergency room visits for fall-related injuries, according to the CDC. Many falls result from a combination of risk factors that include vision problems, side-effects from medicine, lower body fatigue, and other hazards at home.
To help reduce preventable injuries, the Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services provides at-home visits to find potential walking hazards for older residents. The risk of falling at home greatly decreases when residents can remove tripping hazards and install safety equipment, such as grab bars, on staircases or in bathrooms.
“The standard assessment for clients seeking services includes a Fall Risk Screening which utilizes the Timed Up and Go (TUG) assessment and the Sit-to-Stand Test that measure functional mobility and lower body strength, both of which relates to ambulation and the client’s ability to safely navigate their home,” said Renee Burawski, Director of the Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services.
Older adults interested in finding eldercare services, requesting transportation, or receiving assistance can learn more at https://www.somersetcountynj.gov/government/human-services/aging-disability-services.
For individuals that have already experienced a fall, the fear of falling again can become a mental burden that limits their movement and freedom. These injuries can make it difficult for a person to do everyday tasks and live independently.
However, engaging in activities that build strength and improve balance can reduce the likelihood of falling.
Socialization plays a major role in staying active, and since health is more than lifting weights and running, each senior wellness center offers a variety of guided programs and classes for members to enjoy. Avoiding preventable injuries can include stretching and normal exercise, but it can also include line dancing classes to improve mobility and playing table games to refine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
More activities, events, and other helpful resources are scheduled throughout the month of June. All six Somerset County Senior Wellness Centers, which are operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services (OoADS), feature programs that are designed to build community and promote healthy living. All centers will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth.
For anyone aged 60 or older, Somerset County Senior Wellness Centers also offer a nutritionally balanced lunch, Monday through Friday, for a suggested donation of $2.50. Menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée or a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Make lunch reservations prior to 10 a.m. on the previous business day by calling the senior center you wish to attend.
The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services provides information regarding aging safely in place and in the community. Those over 60 who need assistance with daily life activities are welcome to attend with a caregiver. For assistance, including caregiver support and resources, contact the main office at (908) 704-6346 or (888) 747-1122. Staff are available to meet you at a center or in your home.
Programs are free for registered members, unless indicated otherwise. Residents must call or visit a wellness center to register. Proof of identification, age, and residency are required.
Somerset County Senior Wellness Centers are supported by the Somerset County Commissioners and the NJ Department of Human Services, Office of Aging Services.
